The BCUC is responsible for setting energy utility rates for customers in British Columbia (BC), under the Utilities Commission Act.

We set just and reasonable rates and allow utilities the opportunity to earn a fair return on its invested capital. See our Setting Utility Rates fact sheet to learn more.

BC Hydro Electricity Rates

BC Hydro provides electricity service to customers across BC, except for a section of southern BC and in the cities of New Westminster, Penticton, and Nelson. The billing period is normally two-months for BC Hydro’s electricity service to residential customers.

Based on two months of consumption (62 days), electricity rates for BC Hydro’s residential customers , as of July 2022, are:

  • Basic charge = $0.2090 per day
  • Step 1 energy charge (first 1376 kilowatt hours (kWh)) = $0.0950 /kWh
  • Step 2 energy charge (every kWh over 1376) = $0.1408 /kWh

FortisBC Inc. Electricity Rates

FortisBC Inc. provides electricity to customers in a section of southern BC. Customers can choose to be billed monthly or bi-monthly. Electricity rates for FortisBC Inc.’s residential customers , as of July 2022, are:

  • Customer charge = $39.64 per two-month period
  • Step 1 energy charge (first 1600 kWh) =$0.12365 /kWh
  • Step 2 energy charge (every kWh over 1600) = $0.13713 /kWh

FortisBC Energy Inc. Natural Gas Rates

FortisBC Energy Inc. provides natural gas to customers in parts of BC, including the east coast of Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, southern BC, and sections of northern BC.

Natural gas rates for residential customers as of July 2022 are:

  • Basic charge = $0.4216 per day
  • Delivery charge = $5.526 /gigajoule (GJ)
  • Commodity charge = $7.258/GJ
